Whether the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass Ought to be Celebrated Towards the East

How Contrary Orientations Signify Contradictory Theologies
The “primordial form” of Sunday was not so much a feast looking back to the resurrection of Christ on the first Easter, or to any particular mystery or moment of His earthly life, but rather a looking forward with longing to the Lord’s return in glory, imploring Him to deliver us from the evils of sin, death, and hell. Sunday Mass was about the life of the world to come, which the early Christians, suffering bitter and horrific trials, must have thought about a great deal as they hoped and prayed that they would remain faithful: “lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” For this reason, the eastward focus of prayer was a poignant symbol: after the dark and cold night, the sun will rise gloriously on the eastern horizon, shedding light and warmth.
In turning the priest towards the people, we decisively severed ourselves from that which was most ancient, most intrinsic, and most distinctive in our worship as Christians. When we return to ad orientem, we return decisively to the fundamentals of Christian faith and its original practice.

Parte della Chiesa universale. Part of the universal Church.
Da un lettore: / From a reader:
Buongiorno.
Good morning. I was able to watch the holy Mass in Latin on Saint Benedict Abbey’s website (https://www.adorientem.it/2018/10/13/saint-benedict-abbey-still-river-massachusetts/) and by hearing the words in Latin (although pronounced… the American way!) and the Gregorian chants I really felt a part of the universal Church. How nice to see that thousands of miles far from me other Catholic brethren celebrate with the same words and the same chants as mine!
Don’t remove the altar rails. Non togliete le balaustre.
Don’t remove the altar rails. Don’t remove the facilities for kneeling. Vatican II never required that.
Non togliete le balaustre dal presbiterio. Non togliete gli inginocchiatoi. Il Vaticano II non ha mai chiesto di farlo.

We are privileged to have as our inheritance the ancient Gregorian Chant texts for the Mass; as we sing these melodies and words day by day, year by year, it is our privilege thus to place before the Lord the needs of all, asking for the continual gift of transformation of ourselves, our community, our world.
Daily Mass, celebrated in the Church of Jesu Fili Mariae, is immediately preceded by the Office of Terce.
We follow the Novus Ordo form of the Latin Mass from Vatican II. Mass is celebrated according to the Missale Romanum and Graduale in common usage, with the Lectionary readings in English.
